The Passion | 受難

I have dedicated my life to God the Father and in all things I seek his closeness. By his will and his hand I am able to have all that I have. Without him I would not have that which I love and for that alone I hold him above all else. This entry and all of my photography is a monument to I am building to him. He is the reason for my existence.

I was driving home with my wife and children and as we were discussing menial matters I was suddenly hit with a moment of clarity granting me the suggestion of performing this Photo shoot. I was conflicted when the idea suddenly entered my mind with no strand of thought to trace back to an origin point. I prayed on it immediately and was struck with grief and a sense of obligation to do so. I battled with the idea for a time then tears followed. I dropped the family off at the house and then drove west. I did not know the destination immediately yet I continued. I wrestled with the concept as I drove and more tears fell.

I was being asked to do something I never thought that I would step into. For anyone who knows me it is a weekly near daily occurrence for others to comment on my appearance being like that of Jesus. This has gone on for years and I have avoided some nuances to avoid stigma and judgement from others. This has a history of making church attendance an issue as some assume my presence is with malcontent. This is usually not circulated within the immediate congregation but rather interested parties. Needless to say I have avoided depicting Christ even as numerous suggest I take up that cross for Halloween or parties or events.

My whole path into photography has been a path of resolute faith. In hindsight it is not out of the realm of my scope to take on a project like this as I am relentlessly devout and want others to come to know The Father.  I accepted this portrayal and kept driving. I found myself driving towards a craft store with no assurance or thought on what I would need. I wandered around until I found the roses I needed and the paint. Being guided to these even without knowing myself it would work I took it on faith that this is what I needed to do. These were the tools to execute this calling.

I drove back to the house after stopping for my favorite store bought cookies. I waited until everyone had gone to sleep then I set out with a light, camera, paint, water, soap, newly fashioned crown of thorns and a vision. I took several test shots with no blood involved to test the lighting and the positioning. I would soon be unable to make adjustments and start shooting mostly blind. There was a risk of hindering myself with eye contamination.

I used a jar, water soluble acrylic paint, hand soap, and water all mixed together to reach the desired consistency. Once I steeled my nerves I turned the camera back on and began to pour the mixture over the crown and down my face. I watched as the stream followed my features and poured down into the sink. At first it was not so bad but not pleasant. The mixture was not comfortable and was unsettling to feel on my face. Everything was going well and I was being cautious and it was taking to long. I determined that I would need to increase the rate at which it flowed over me; giving up control over the blood pouring across the canvas I had become.

It quickly moved into the ravine that was my mouths topological landscape. During this moment it also pooled at the edge of my nose threatening to travel into my sinus's. At this point the moment began to feel crushingly heavy and my mind started to race. I calmed my mind as best as I could and I continued to pour this formulated blood over my face. Up to this point I had avoided my eyes mostly. This was only momentary.

Then colesancing as a tide pool my eye began to flood with the crimson wash. At this point I stopped for but only a moment an looked myself in the mirror. The thought to stop flashed across my minds embrace. Swiftly I quelled that ravenous thought and asked for patience and grit. It was decided that I had crossed that line and poured even more heavily. The man in the mirror was in pain and despair.

We can only hope to ever serve as a mirror to the most merciful and gracious of us. This mere fleeting discomfort was nothing in the face of the man staring back at me. So I lifted the camera once more and began to execute with precision. I was shooting handheld in manual mode with all assists other than focus turned off. I moved quickly, quietly, and calculated while I framed myself before the camera. The pain only began to intensify as I continued. I resisted all urge to turn back and put the camera down. The metallic, chemical laced brine began to burn at my lips and flood my pallet. I seemed no longer able to keep the crimson tide at bay.

I continued for about 10 minutes and realized it looked force or my face was gnarled. I then realized this is not something that Christ would have done. In that moment of despair and pain he would carry the weight of exhaustion and sacrifice beyond all measure. All I could do was calm myself and allow my own life’s burdens and repressed exhaustion show through. This was the only course of action if I wanted to carry any reverence into this scene. I loosed my expression and disregarded the seal my clenched eye had formed and the dam my lips had built.

I allowed it all I take over as I once again continued. I prayed for the allowance of completing what I had promised I would do. I made myself vulnerable completely before God and the lens. Then after a time I set the camera down and hurriedly placed myself into the shower. Once I arose from the steam and pulled back the curtain what I witnessed was the set of a horrendous crime. To anyone looking in from the outside it would look as if I had died. The sink, counter, and floor were painted by the brush of murder. I quickly cleaned up and retreated to the bedroom. I transferred the files and cleaned paint off the camera that I had missed in my hurry. What I saw on the screen is what I have shown you above.

Above all else I love The Father. The suffering I partook in this moment was nothing before that of the crucifixion. I had only hoped to bring my internal conviction and immortalize it into a monument for our Father. To bring awareness to the sacrifice made on behalf of humanity in the most visceral way I could. With no one other than Father himself to witness the moment. I hope these un manipulated photos meet you well. This is a testament to my faith and my love.
