It was 2011–2012, and I was newly out of high school. I was in what I thought was my first real relationship, but it ended in disaster. To save face, I will only focus on the details relevant to my near-death experience..

At the time, I was young, naive, and had not yet suffered massive relational betrayal. What followed was total annihilation on three fronts: the person I was dating, the people I considered my friends, and my roommate along with his direct circle. This was revealed to me in stages. I had been desperately and hopelessly in love, believing I had found the person I was going to spend my life with. Like many who experience their first deep relationship, I thought it was forever. It was certainly not.

Toward the end of the relationship, I suddenly lost all ability to get into contact with her. We went from talking every day and seeing each other several times a week to complete silence—no warning that I could perceive, and, unbeknownst to me, a plot against me involving multiple people. I was desperately trying to reach her, terrified and unsure if she was even okay. She had left for a trip for a week or two, and then my phone stopped working. Facebook messages and every other method yielded nothing. I didn’t spam her for the first three days; I simply checked in, hoping to hear back.

After the first 72 to 96 hours, I began reaching out much more frequently, desperate for any response at all. A simple “I am busy, talk to you when I get back,” an “I don’t want to talk right now,” or even just an “I am alive.” Any sign of life would have sufficed. By the seven-day mark, I realized something fundamental had changed. I went to sleep that night and had a long, stressful dream. In that deep-seated, anxious sleep, the realization hit me. I woke up to the cold, hard truth: I had been cheated on and was being avoided. I texted her that I knew what happened and that she had cheated. Silence followed for a time, until I finally received a text: “We need to talk.” My heart sank. I was numb and knew without a doubt what had happened, yet I still tried to remain optimistic. I was not yet jaded by the world.

When she returned, she agreed to come over. During our conversation, I insisted on knowing who it was. She told me, “No, you don’t want to know.” I pushed forward, but she refused to tell me. I asked if it was someone she met on her trip, adding that we could work past it if so. She painfully shook her head no. Taken aback, I asked if it was someone from work, and she said no again. My mind began cycling through every potential person. After running through the possibilities, it became clear I was truly not going to like the answer, but I would rather know the truth than live in ignorance. Finally, it was revealed: it was my roommate—the man I was living with.

By this point, I had barely slept over those two weeks. After she confessed, she left. I sat there alone, unable to feel anything for a moment. It felt like a hot ice spear piercing my chest. Shortly after, I burst into anger and despair, alone in a house with no one around to hear. Tears streaming down my face, I punched a wall as I ran down the stairs, got into my car, and drove across town. I just kept driving.

The following week was a blur. I noticed a shift at the place where we used to work together. She spoke to me once after that, and I mentioned to her that I had previously witnessed the man she cheated on me with being abusive toward his girlfriend. This infuriated her, coming right after she had mentioned considering getting back together with me because she missed how attentive I was to her health needs and preferences.

I just wanted to talk, and she hadn't explicitly told me not to. She just avoided me. As the workplace environment grew increasingly hostile—with glares and nasty scoffs directed at me—I broke my weeks-long silence. I had initially decided not to tell anyone, but enough was enough. I asked my coworkers if they knew why we had broken up. They looked surprised that I spoke to them and said no. I told them she had cheated on me and that I had simply kept quiet about it. That cleared the air; they stopped treating me like a criminal and backed off. It became obvious she had been lying about me to everyone.

Time passed, and I still wasn't sleeping. It reached a point where I had gone about seven days straight without sleep, losing my ability to reason on top of feeling completely destroyed. I spent time at a local shop playing board games and card games, where I knew the owner and was friendly with several regulars. I do not remember the exact order of events, but I eventually discovered there had been a deliberate plot against me by someone there who felt slighted by me—perhaps I had slighted them out of ignorance without realizing it. I was young, foolish, and didn't understand the games being played around me. The plan had been to target my girlfriend and orchestrate an affair with my roommate to destroy me.

That friend circle fractured as mutual friends revealed what had happened. The person responsible was bragging about hurting me and playing me to get even. A mutual friend admitted that while what I had done to slight them was foolish, it came from ignorance, whereas what this person did was pure malice.

During this period, I hit 14 days without sleep. To stay functional, I began drinking massive energy drinks—the giant 2010s cans that looked big enough to fuel a car. Without thinking or caring about the consequences, I drank three or four of them within a 45-minute span.

I quickly realized my mistake. Immediate, crushing regret hit me like a vise as my body spiraled into severe physical pain and emotional turmoil. Overcome by intense stomach cramps and chest pains, I ended up literally crawling two to three miles across town around 1:00 AM. I made it to a friend’s house, where he comforted me as best he could. I managed to sleep for a few hours to pass the pain, but the experience was excruciating.

After waking up, I went another four days without sleep. Finally, after 18 days with only those few hours of rest, my body gave out and I slept deeply for two days straight. Once I came back to my senses, I realized how close to death I had actually been and that I should have been in a hospital. Considering I had a heart condition and had undergone surgery less than two years prior, it was a miracle I survived. This was my first major brush with death, found at the bottom of a few oversized cans.

The story wasn't over yet. Shortly after, I received a random text from someone in my second circle—my primary group of childhood friends, the very people I had grown up with. He was a close friend of my best friend, someone I had actually introduced my ex to. He asked politely if I would be okay with him dating her. I appreciated the candor and told him I was still hurting and preferred he didn't, though I thanked him for asking. Instantly, his demeanor flipped. He sent a rude, colorful reply telling me off. That single interaction turned my entire childhood friend group against me. They ostracized me, told me not to come around anymore, accused me of being malicious, told me to get over it, and said it was happening whether I liked it or not. I replied that if that was how it was going to go, I would have had far more respect if he had just been honest from the start instead of asking for permission he didn't care to receive.

Having lost both friend circles—including my lifelong childhood friends—and with no one willing to listen or understand what I was going through, I knew that if I didn't leave my hometown, I wasn't going to survive. I packed a single backpack and a duffel bag and moved four and a half hours away to live near family, leaving everyone and everything behind, never to speak to them again.

Philadelphia was not a place I ever anticipated living, yet it became my escape from a place that had all but claimed my soul. This was my first taste of death. Only by the Father's hand did I live when, by all medical logic, I should have been gone.

Thank you for sparing me, Father.
