Desolate | 荒涼

As I was exploring desolate structures caught my notice. It became apparent these structures are impending erasure. Documenting their face before they are wiped from collective memory became the days session.

Depicted above is a Parking garage and its extended facilities. Driving pass it many times initiated a spark of intrigue. Across the street there was active demolition of the larger facilities to which this parking garage belonged. Viewing the town at the top of the asphalt tower would no longer be the same once demolition was complete. Houses would be raised up from the collapse the hospital that stood on that soil. Built upon skeleton of the industrial medical complex would soon be a neighborhood of new beginnings and memories. The scars and the intercessions of medicine soon to be struck from the face of the earth.

Clarity is not assured as to the fate of the asphalt tower that will glance at the future unrelentingly. It seems highly improbable that it will remain while it has been vacant remnant of the eroding facilities across the street. Documenting this facility was important to the history of this town. The world is changing and documentation to elipse the fragile memory of what came before is paramount. The custodians of history often forget what was when viewed after the event. Documentary work allows for the present to be viewed at a later time with some semblance of clarity.

The attached facilities were locked and desolate with spider webs overlaying the entry ways and caution tape sealing the open entrances. While accessible by foot into the main environment of the parking garage I chose to not trespass as I could document the underbelly from a distance. Several of the photos look as if I was standing in the building however I was standing behind a fence and pressed the lens through the fencing. Several intriguing thoughts had crossed my mind but I was content with the study of light and shadow that was revealed to me.



廃墟の記録と都市の変容

探索を進める中で、荒廃した建築物の存在が私の目を惹きつけた。それらの構造物が、まさに消失の刻（とき）を迎えようとしていることは明白であった。集合的記憶から消し去られる前に、その貌（かお）を記録すること——それがこの日の撮影セッションの主題となった。

ここに描かれているのは、立体駐車場とそれに付随する施設群である。その傍らを何度となく車で走り抜けるうち、胸の中に興味の火花が芽生えた。道路を挟んだ向かい側では、この駐車場が属していた大型施設群の本格的な解体作業が進められていた。解体が完了すれば、このアスファルトの塔の頂から見下ろす街の風景は、もはや二度とこれまでと同じ姿を保つことはない。かつてその土地に聳え立っていた病院の崩壊の跡地から、やがて新たな住宅群が姿を現すだろう。産業医療複合体の骨組みの上に築かれるのは、新しい始まりと記憶を刻む静かな住宅街である。医療が刻んだ傷痕と介入の記憶は、まもなく地上から掃滅されようとしている。

未来を峻烈に見つめ続けるこのアスファルトの塔の末路については、未だ判然としない。向かい側の衰退した施設群の空虚な残骸と化した今、この塔だけが残される可能性は極めて低いと思われる。この施設を記録することは、この街の歴史にとって極めて重要であった。世界は変容を続けており、かつて存在したものの脆弱な記憶を補完し、記録に留めることは何よりも至上命題である。歴史の管理職たる人間は、事象が過ぎ去った後には過去の真姿を往々にして忘却してしまう。ドキュメンタリー写真という営みは、後刻において、現在の瞬間を確かな明瞭さをもって見つめ返すことを可能にするのだ。

付属施設は封鎖され、静寂に包まれていた。入口には蜘蛛の巣が張り巡らされ、開口部には警告テープが貼られて拒絶を示している。立体駐車場の主空間へは徒歩で立ち入ることが可能な状態であったが、私は不法侵入を選ばず、離れた場所からその下部構造（アンダーベリー）を観察・記録することにした。幾つかの写真では建物内部に立ち入って撮影したかのように見えるかもしれないが、私はフェンスの後ろに立ち、その隙間にレンズを押し当てて捉えたに過ぎない。数々の興味深い思索が脳裏をよぎったが、眼前に示された光と影の考察に、私は深く満たされていた。
